The process of converting an alternating current of a certain frequency (→ frequency) to another frequency. This is used in receivers such as radios, televisions, and communication devices, as well as heterodyne frequency meters and frequency analyzers. When a signal wave of frequency f is added to a separately created local oscillator wave of frequency f _M , a beat of frequency f ± f _M is generated, which is extracted by detection using a diode or by tuned amplification. Normally, the difference is used in receivers, and the converted beat is called an intermediate frequency and is easy to amplify. By further amplifying this, an amplifier with high sensitivity and high resolution can be obtained. This method is called the superheterodyne receiving method. Frequency conversion also refers to the conversion of AC power from one frequency to another. Conversion between 50 Hz and 60 Hz commercial power is well known, and is done using a transformer and a thyristor.

ある周波数 (→振動数 ) の交流を別の周波数に変えること。ラジオ，テレビジョン，通信機器などの受信機のほか，ヘテロダイン周波数計，周波数分析器などに利用される。周波数 f の信号波に別につくった周波数 f_M の局部発振器の波を加え合せると f±f_M の周波数のうなりが生じるが，これをダイオードなどの検波，または同調増幅で取出す。普通受信機では差のほうが用いられ，変換されたうなりは中間周波と呼ばれ増幅しやすくなる。これをさらに増幅することにより高感度，高分離度の増幅器が得られる。このような方法をスーパーヘテロダイン受信方式という。また周波数変換は交流電力をある周波数からほかの周波数に変換することをもさす。 50Hzと 60Hzの商用電力における変換はよく知られており，変圧器とサイリスタが用いられる。
