Michio Sakurama

Noh actor. Shite actor of the Konparu school. Second son of Sakurama Rintaro. Born in Kumamoto City. Moved to Tokyo at the age of 16 to study under his uncle Sakurama Banma and cousin Sakurama Kintaro (later known as Yumikawa). After the deaths of masters Honda Hideo and Sakurama Yumikawa, both born in the same year and from Kumamoto, he became important in the Noh world with his rock-solid technique and unique Noh style. He revived the old woman's Noh play "Higaki" in his own style, performed it three times, and danced "Dojoji" at the age of 84, achieving unprecedented feats. In 1970, he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. He is good at oil painting, and has also appeared in plays such as "Aya no Tsuzumi" (written by Yukio Mishima) and "Egazata Nyobo" (written by Shizuichi Yashiro), directed by Tetsuji Takechi. He has written a book titled "Noh - The Art of Rejection."
