A photographic method invented in 1851 by British sculptor F. Archer (1813-57). Compared to methods such as daguerreotype photography, it was simple to operate, inexpensive, and produced good results, making it a pioneer in the spread of photography. In Japan, it is also called "raw photography" or "glass photography," and became widely used during the Meiji period. It was called wet plate photography because the silver iodide collodion film applied to the glass plate was photographed while it was wet and did not lose its photosensitivity. Later, a photosensitive material that did not lose its photosensitivity even after drying was invented, and this was called a dry plate. Wet plate photography was also used in photoprocessing until the recent development of dedicated lithography film.
