Year of death: 1911.1.24(1911.1.24)
Born: October 29, 1854
A foreigner employed in Japan during the Meiji period. A German forestry scholar. Born in Bavaria (Germany). His father was a forestry officer. During his time at the gymnasium in Munich, he served as a shorthand reporter for forestry conferences, and after graduating, he became a forestry apprentice at the forestry office where his father worked. From 1876, when he studied at forestry school, until his later years, he continued to explore and research forests around the world. He first came to Japan in 1885 (Meiji 18) to carry out forest surveys, and stayed until the following year. In January 1888, he was invited to become a professor at the Tokyo Agricultural and Forestry School (Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tokyo), and returned to Japan again, lecturing on silviculture and forest botany. He returned to Japan in February 1891. During that time, he explored forests in various locations, from Etorofu in the north to Yakushima in the south. The result, "Considerations on the Fir Family Plants of Japan" (1890), became the foundation for research into Japan's forest vegetation zones. When he left Japan, he commented that "the mountains of Izu and Kyushu are barren." In 1903, he visited Japan for the third time as part of the retinue of the Bavarian prince.
