Saint. From Hebron, Judah. A popular leader who grew up and worked in the wilderness. He is considered a forerunner of Jesus Christ (Mark 1:2). Muslims consider him one of their prophets, and Mandaeans revere him. He preached on the banks of the Jordan River, preaching the baptism of repentance, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." He prophesied about a great Christ who would appear after him and baptize people with the Holy Spirit and fire, and was said to be the second coming of Elijah. Jesus was also baptized by him. He is said to have later opposed the marriage of King Herod and Herodias, and was killed in prison.
