Polonnaruwa (English spelling)

An ancient capital of Sri Lanka, along with Anuradhapura. In 1070, Vijayabahu I moved the capital from Anuradhapura after expelling the South Indian Tamils who had invaded in the 11th century. It flourished most during the reign of Parakramabahu I and Nissanka Malla in the 12th and 13th centuries, and many Buddhist monks visited from Thailand and Burma (now Myanmar). The site of the capital spreads to the east of the artificial lake, and includes the remains of the royal palace, the circular Vatadage, which houses a stupa, the Nissanka Ratha Mandapaya, an architecture with lotus-shaped pillars, the seven-story Sat Mahal Parsada, which has been noted for its similarity to Thai temple architecture, and two Shiva temples (11th century) built by the Tamils.
