It is a silicate mineral with a complex composition, which is why it has the widest variety of colors among gemstones. Parti-colored tourmaline, which has two or more colored areas in a single crystal, and watermelon, which is green on the outside and red or pink on the inside, are characteristics unique to tourmaline and are highly valued. There are also single-colored varieties ranging from colorless to red, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, and black. The most common is green tourmaline, but each has its own name, such as red or pink rubellite, dark blue indicolite, colorless achroite, and black schorl.
