This refers to literature written in Greek in the Byzantine Empire. Its basic characteristic is the duality between cultured literature written in ancient Attic or its pseudo-forms, and popular literature written in medieval popular language, which was the precursor to modern Greek popular language (Dimotiki). This is because, although Greek also evolved in basically the same vein as Latin (Ancient Latin → Medieval Vulgar Latin → Romance languages), from ancient Attic to Koine → Medieval and modern Greek popular language, literary activities written in ancient Attic, which was no longer a spoken language, continued to prevail in the Byzantine Empire.
