The future population. It is usually estimated from existing population statistics. There are predictions of future population for the relatively near future and projections of future population that extend beyond that based on certain assumptions. According to a 1992 estimate of Japan's future population by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's Institute of Population Problems, the population is expected to peak at 127.39 million in 2000 and 130.44 million in 2011, and then continue to decline. For comparison, Japan's population in 1998 was 125.56 million. According to UN estimates, the world population is expected to be 6.89 billion in 2010 and 8.37 billion in 2030.
