A bird of the family Scolopacidae in the order Charadriiformes. Total length is about 42 cm. A snipe with a long, downward-curving beak. It breeds in the tundra of Eurasia and northern North America, and migrates to Africa, South Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, etc. in winter. It migrates to Japan as a migratory bird, and there are many of them. The upper side of the body is black-brown with pale wing lines and spots, and the black-brown lateral line of the head and white waist and upper tail cover are conspicuous. The legs are blue-gray, and it nests on the ground in the tundra, laying four pear-shaped eggs with black-brown markings on an olive-brown ground per clutch.

チドリ目シギ科の鳥。全長約42cm。くちばしが長くて下に湾曲したシギ。ユーラシア大陸および北アメリカ北部のツンドラ帯で繁殖し，冬はアフリカ，南アジア，オーストラリア，ニュージーランド，南アメリカなどに渡る。日本には旅鳥として全国に渡来し，数は少なくない。体の上面は黒褐色で淡色の羽線と斑点があり，黒褐色の頭側線および白い腰と上尾筒が目だつ。脚は青灰色，ツンドラの地上に営巣し，1腹4個のオリーブ褐色の地に黒褐色の斑紋のあるヨウナシ形の卵を産む。
