Born: September 25, 1599 in Bissone [Died] August 2, 1667. The most original architect of the Italian High Baroque period in Rome. He initially trained as a stonemason, and in the late 1620s went to Rome to study under C. Maderno and then G. Bernini. He later became his chief assistant and was responsible for the architectural sculptures of St. Peter's Basilica and Palazzo Barberini. He became independent after working on the Basilica of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1638-46, façade 1662-67, Rome). The wavy walls of the façade are small-scale but have a fluid, sculptural effect. He created the quintessential Baroque style from then on. For the Basilica of Sant'Ivo della Sapienza (1642-60), he created a unique architectural space based on a star shape made up of two equilateral triangles. Other works he produced include the Oratorio di San Philippe Neri (1635-55), the interior renovation of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano (1647-50, Laterano), the Basilica of Sant'Agnese in Agone facing Piazza Navona (1653-57), and the Alexandrine Library at Palazzo della Sapienza (1665-66), which became the model for 18th-century libraries. His innovative spatial concept had a great impact on central Europe, and he became a master renowned alongside Bernini.
