[Born] Bunka 9 (1812) [Died] May 8, 1866 (Keio 2). Kabuki actor. Stage name: Takashimaya. Born the son of a pirate seller at the Edo Ichimura-za, he trained in Kyoto and Osaka under Ichikawa Danjūrō VII, and gained fame for his aerial acrobatics and fighting in "Shichi Henge." In 1847, he returned to Edo, where he gained popularity for his quick costume changes in ghost stories. From 1854 onwards, he partnered with the playwright Kawatake Mokuami, and pioneered a new style of Edo live-acting kyogen with musical direction and a realistic artistic style that skillfully incorporated the strengths of the Kansai region.
