Ichikawa Kodanji (4th generation)

[Died] May 8, 1866 (Keio 2).
Kabuki actor. Stage name: Takashimaya. Born the son of a pirate seller at the Edo Ichimura-za, he trained in Kyoto and Osaka under Ichikawa Danjūrō VII, and gained fame for his aerial acrobatics and fighting in "Shichi Henge." In 1847, he returned to Edo, where he gained popularity for his quick costume changes in ghost stories. From 1854 onwards, he partnered with the playwright Kawatake Mokuami, and pioneered a new style of Edo live-acting kyogen with musical direction and a realistic artistic style that skillfully incorporated the strengths of the Kansai region.

歌舞伎俳優。屋号高島屋。江戸市村座の火縄売りの子として生れ，7世市川団十郎の門下で京坂で修業し，「七変化」の宙乗りや立回りなどで名を高める。弘化4 (1847) 年江戸へ帰り，怪談物の早替りなどで人気を集めた。安政1 (54) 年以降は，作者の河竹黙阿弥と提携して，江戸生世話狂言において関西の長所を巧みに取入れた音楽的演出と写実的芸風で新生面を開いた。
