Japanese film. Directed by Oshima Nagisa in 1960. It depicts the relationship between a couple, Makoto (Kuwano Miyuki, 1942-) and Kiyoshi (Kawazu Yusuke, 1935-), whose reckless behavior leads to their tragic death. The film style of Shochiku, the production company of this film, portrays healthy everyday life of ordinary people with a warm gaze, and was called "Ofuna-style" after the location of the studio, Ofuna. This film is a violent and anti-social work that opposes that style, but it brought a new direction to Shochiku, which was stagnant at the time. It was called "Shochiku Nouvelle Vague" after the new trend in French films, "Nouvelle Vague," and Oshima became a central figure in it. Various works were born from this Shochiku Nouvelle Vague, but the trend was short-lived.
