[raw]? [Died] 128 B.C. King of Pergamon. Probably the illegitimate son of Eumenes II of Pergamon. He led a popular uprising when the kingdom of Pergamon was bequeathed to Rome after the death of Attalus III. His motives were ethnic and anti-Roman, and he sought to attract the lower classes, especially slaves and non-Greeks. His vision of a solar state, Heliopolis, suggested a social revolutionary program. He had some initial success, but was betrayed by the propertied citizens, captured and executed by the Romans.
