Ren Yi (English spelling)

Japanese: 任頤 - じんい（英語表記）Rén Yí

1840‐96
A Chinese painter from the late Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Boyian, and his pen name was Tziyuan. He was from Shanyin County, Zhejiang Province (now Shaoxing). He moved to Shanghai at the age of 15 and devoted himself to his creative endeavors, becoming acquainted with Xu Gu and Wu Changshuo, and becoming the most popular artist of the Shanghai school. From middle age onwards, he learned new brushwork from the painting style of the Eight Great Shanren, breathing new life into paintings of flowers and birds, people, landscapes and other subjects, and had a major influence on modern Chinese painting. Together with his teachers Ren Xiong, Ren Xun, and Ren Yu, he was known as one of the "Four Rens." [Endo Koichi]

中国，清末の画家。字を伯年，号を次遠といった。浙江省山陰県(現，紹興)の人。15歳で上海に住んで創作に励み，虚谷や呉昌碩（ごしようせき）らと交わり，上海派第一の流行作家となった。中年以後は八大山人の画風から新しい用筆法を会得し，花鳥，人物，山水画等に新風を吹き込み，中国の近代絵画に大きな影響を及ぼした。師の任熊（じんゆう），任薫，任預とともに〈四任〉と称された。【遠藤光一】
