A perennial plant of the Acanthaceae family that grows in marshes (illustration). The rhizome crawls horizontally through the Sphagnum moss, and leaves grow in bunches at the nodes. The leaves are erect, thin, hard, semicircular in cross section, and 10-30 cm long. They have drainage holes at the tip and a leaf sheath and ligule at the base. In summer, the flower stalk grows upright, 10-20 cm high, with several leaves arranged alternately. The leaves at the top of the flower stalk become small bracts, and flowers bloom in the axils. The flowers are bisexual, with six yellow-green perianths. There are six stamens with filaments, and the anthers are long and slender. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
