A one-year compound interest term deposit was introduced in June 1981. The depositor can specify the desired maturity date in advance when making the deposit. In June 1993, interest rates on term deposits were liberalized, allowing each financial institution to set its own interest rate. A term deposit with a specified maturity date is characterized by the fact that the maturity date can be freely specified between one year and three years, with a maximum of three years (fixed period of one year), and partial withdrawal of 10,000 yen or more is also possible. Interest is calculated based on the interest rate for three-month term deposits for more than three months but less than six months, six-month term deposits for more than six months but less than one year, and one-year term deposits for more than one year but less than two years.
