A deciduous tree of the family Ardisiaceae (APG classification: Ardisiaceae). Entire plant is hairless. It grows to a height of 5-10 meters. The twigs are fragile and break easily, hence the name. The leaves are triangular-ovate or ovate, 5-6 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, entire, and have a pointed tail at the tip. In March and April, racemes are produced in the leaf axils, and several fragrant yellowish-white flowers bloom. The corolla is tubular, 5-7 mm long. The ovary is three-lobed and semi-inferior. The drupe is elliptical-globular, about 8 mm long, and ripens to a red color. It grows in evergreen forests, and is distributed in southern Kyushu, Okinawa, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.
