A species of bird in the family Guineafowl, or any of seven species in the same family. The guineafowl Numida meleagris (illustration) is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. A subspecies native to West Africa was imported to Europe by the Portuguese at the end of the Middle Ages and bred into the breed seen today, but it has been used for food by the Romans and Greeks since ancient times. Today, it is widely kept as a domesticated bird throughout the world and is a useful poultry.

キジ目ホロホロチョウ科の鳥の1種，または同科に含まれる7種の総称。ホロホロチョウNumida meleagris（イラスト）は，サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカに広く分布する。アフリカ西部産の亜種が，中世の終わりころにポルトガル人によってヨーロッパに輸入され，今日見られるような品種に改良されたが，古来からローマおよびギリシア人によって食用に供されてきた。現在では，世界中で広く飼養され，有用な家禽（かきん）となっている。
