… At the end of the Edo period, Ichikawa Beian also published a catalog of over 200 brushes in his collection, the Beian Collection of Brushes (1834), as well as the first and second volumes of Beian Bokudan and the Catalogue of the Koyama Rindo Painting and Calligraphy Library, and deepened his research into stationery. Kobaien of Nara, famous for its ink production, opened a shop in Kyoto, and Kyukodo, which made a living selling medicine and incense, also began selling brushes. When the education system was reformed in the Meiji period, the common Oie style that had been practiced in temple schools was replaced by a more powerful Chinese style, and the scrolled core was abandoned in favor of the water brush (no core brush). …
