A technology for the effective use of thermal energy. To use thermal energy, it is necessary to pass it through a low-temperature heat source, and high-temperature thermal energy is transformed into low-temperature thermal energy that is extremely difficult to use. No matter how large a quantity of this low-temperature thermal energy is, it is difficult to use it as is, so the effective use of high-temperature thermal energy is related to the amount of high-temperature heat source such as fuel used, which affects the cost of industrial products. Fuel costs account for a large proportion of industrial products, and the ability to use thermal energy effectively can affect the survival of a company, so heat management is becoming increasingly important.

Heat management consists of fuel management, combustion management, and heat utilization management. Fuel management is the technology to properly select, purchase, transport, and store fuel suited to the intended use, thereby streamlining the total fuel cost. Combustion management is the technology to completely burn fuel and treat exhaust gases, burning fuel completely and without generating unnecessarily high-temperature combustion gases, and treating exhaust gases in a clean manner. Recently, fuel supply and other processes have become efficiently controlled automatically. Heat utilization management is the technology to transfer the heat of high-temperature gases to the heat carrier to the maximum extent possible, recover exhaust heat, and gradually maximize the use of thermal energy throughout the factory according to the required temperature. Now that the depletion of fuels such as oil has become a problem, heat management is becoming increasingly important.

熱エネルギーを有効に利用するための技術。熱エネルギーを利用するにはかならず低温の熱源に熱を流す必要があり、高温の熱エネルギーも利用のきわめて困難な低温の熱エネルギーに変化する。この低温の熱エネルギーはいくら大量にあってもそのままでは利用がむずかしいので、高温の熱エネルギーの有効な使用は燃料などの高温熱源の使用量に関係し、工業製品ではコストに影響を与える。工業製品などでは燃料費の占める割合が大きく、熱エネルギーを有効に利用できるか否かは企業の存続に影響を与えるほどで、熱管理が重要になってきている。

 熱管理は燃料の管理、燃焼の管理、熱利用の管理からなる。燃料の管理は、使用目的に適合する燃料の選択、購入、運搬、貯蔵を適切に行う技術で、燃料の総コストを合理化する。燃焼の管理は、燃料の完全な燃焼、排ガスの処理の技術で、燃料を完全に、しかも不必要に高温の燃焼ガスにしない燃焼をさせ、排ガスを清浄に処理する技術である。最近は燃料供給などを効率的に自動制御で行うようになった。熱利用の管理は、高温ガスの熱を最大限に熱媒体に伝え、排熱を回収し、工場全体で熱エネルギーを必要温度にあわせ段階的に最大限に利用する技術である。石油などの燃料枯渇が問題となった現在、熱管理は重要度を増している。
