This garden is located southwest of the Imperial Palace. Its area is said to be 300,000 to 400,000 square meters. A river runs through the garden, and the forest is lush, leaving a trace of Musashino. It is located behind the Nishinomaru of Edo Castle, and was expanded and improved during the reign of the fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi. The sixth shogun, Ienobu, appointed the Fukiage Magistrate in 1710 (7th year of the Hoei era) to manage the garden. The eighth shogun, Yoshimune, established a botanical garden and other facilities, transforming the garden, which had previously been intended for sightseeing, into a more practical one. When the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1869 (2nd year of the Meiji era), the Nishinomaru became the Imperial Palace, and it became the Imperial Garden. Teahouses such as Soukin-tei and Kanko-tei were built there, and Emperor Meiji often held banquets there. In 1961 (36th year of the Showa era), the Fukiage Palace, the Emperor's private residence, was built within the Imperial Garden, and it is now off-limits to the general public.
