An old town in Watarai County in the central south of Mie Prefecture. The Kisei Main Line runs through the town. Most of the town area is mountain forest, and forestry is active, producing a lot of timber and shiitake mushrooms. The area facing the Kumano Nada Sea is a rich fishing ground, with yellowtail and other fish caught. In February 2005, it merged with Omiya Town and Ouchiyama Village in Watarai County to become a town, Taiki Town. 68.12 km2 . 4,570 people (2003). 三重県中南部,度会(わたらい)郡の旧町。紀勢本線が通じる。町域の大部分は山林で林業が活発,木材,シイタケを多産。熊野灘に面する地区は豊かな漁場で,ブリなどの漁獲がある。2005年2月度会郡大宮町,大内山村と合併し町制,大紀町となる。68.12km2。4570人(2003)。
