Bose, Satyendra Nath
Born: January 1, 1894, Calcutta
[Died] February 4, 1974, Calcutta Indian physicist. Studied at Presidency College, Calcutta, and became a lecturer at University College (1916) and an assistant professor at the University of Dhaka (23). He studied in France and Germany (24), and after returning to Japan, became a professor at the University of Dhaka (27) and the University of Calcutta (45). In 1923, he discovered quantum statistics for light quanta (→Bose statistics) and derived M. Planck's radiation formula. This paper was sent to Einstein, who translated it into German and published it. Einstein later developed Bose's ideas, so this statistics is also called Bose-Einstein statistics. Particles that obey this statistics are called bosons after him. He is a member of the Royal Society of London (58).
