The aim is to improve the efficiency of learning and social life by limiting the type, style, and pronunciation of kanji to simpler ones, and to improve the national character problem. There are extreme arguments for abolishing kanji altogether, but there are also opinions that this would not improve social or cultural life, and since this is difficult to implement in reality, as a second-best measure, proposals to reduce the number of kanji have been considered since the Meiji period and have sometimes been implemented, but have not borne fruit. After World War II, kanji restrictions were strongly implemented in the Joyo Kanji List, but the trend was to relax them in the Joyo Kanji List.
