With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was elevated from the Udmurt Autonomous Republic of the Russian Soviet Republic to a republic in 1992. Its area is 421,000 km2, and its population is 1,605,600 (1989). Its capital is Izhevsk (population approximately 650,000).
