…A republic in the center of the Russian Federation. It is located west of the Ural Mountains, between the Kama River and the Vyatka River, two tributaries of the Volga River. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was elevated from the Udmurt Autonomous Republic of the Russian Soviet Republic to a republic in 1992. Its area is 421,000 km2, and its population is 1,605,600 (1989). Its capital is Izhevsk (population approximately 650,000).
