A rocket that uses the recoil of a photon blast to propel it forward. The speed that the rocket can reach is proportional to the speed of the gas that is blasted out. Since the speed of light is 300,000 km per second, a rocket that flies by the recoil of a photon blast can be the fastest, and no rocket faster than this is imaginable. This type of rocket was proposed by E. Senger of Germany around 1953, and his idea was to attach a huge reflector to the tail end, and to cause a special nuclear reaction at the focal point to create a very dense beam of light, which would be propelled by the recoil. This requires a reflector with perfect reflectivity and a nuclear reaction that converts almost the entire mass of the material involved in the reaction into photons, but there is no hope of realizing this at present. However, in theory, it is a dream rocket that could travel beyond the solar system and even to other stars.

光子の噴出の反動を利用して推進させようというロケット。ロケットが到達できる速度は噴出させるガスの速度に比例する。光の速度は秒速 30万 kmであるから，光子の噴出の反動で飛ぶロケットは最も速くなりうるわけで，これ以上速いロケットは考えられない。このようなロケットは，ドイツの E.ゼンガーが 1953年頃に提案したもので，その構想は尾端に巨大な反射鏡を取付け，その焦点にあたる部分で特殊な核反応を行わせ，非常に濃密な光のビームをつくり，その反動で推進させるというものだった。それには完全な反射率をもった反射鏡や反応にあずかった物質のほとんど全質量が光子に転化するような核反応が必要であるが，いまのところは実現の見込みはない。しかし理論的には，太陽系を越えて，他の恒星にまで旅ができるという夢のロケットである。
