In novels, social realism developed against the background of discrimination and abuse of exiles, Native Americans and Asians, and conflicts between squatters (large ranch owners) and small farmers and migrant herdsmen, and Marcus Clarke (1846-81), Rolf Boldrewood (1826-1915), Joseph Furphy (1843-1912), Lawson and X.
