Year of birth: 1759
A Western-style painter in Nagasaki in the late Edo period. He served as a payment official at the Nagasaki Kaisho. His biological father was blind and worked as an acupuncturist. He was initially adopted by his uncle Wakasugi Keijuro, and later became the son-in-law of Kume Toyosaburo and took the name Kume Yajuro. The circumstances of his study of Western painting techniques are unclear, but he may have had contact with the Dutch interpreter Yoshio Kogyu. The hanging picture of "Western Ships" dedicated to Kyoto's Imamiya Shrine has an inscription dated 1791, which shows that he had mastered oil painting techniques by the Kansei era (1789-1801). His oil painting techniques are among the most excellent of any Western-style painter in the late Edo period, including "Falconer" (Tokyo University of the Arts), which was based on a copperplate print by JE Riedinger, and influences from Chinese Qing dynasty Western-style painting can also be seen.

江戸後期の長崎の洋風画家。長崎会所請払役を勤める。実父は盲人で鍼療を業とした。はじめ伯父若杉敬十郎の養子となり,のち久米豊三郎の娘婿に入って久米弥十郎と称した。西洋画法研究の経緯は不明だが,和蘭通詞吉雄耕牛との接触も考えられる。京都今宮神社へ奉納された懸額「洋船図」に,寛政3(1791)年の銘文があることから,寛政年間(1789～1801)には油彩技法を身につけていたことがわかる。J.E.リーディンガーの銅版画を原図とした「鷹匠図」(東京芸大蔵)をはじめ,江戸後期洋風画家中では最も優れた油彩画法を示しており,中国清朝洋風画からの影響も認められる。
