A mining and industrial city in the northwest of Bohemia, Czech Republic. Population 68,755 (2001). The center of the Most lignite coal field. Originating as a medieval city in the 13th century, it developed in the late 19th century as coal mining became more widespread. During World War II, it suffered heavy damage from air raids as part of Nazi Germany, but a late Gothic church from the 16th century remains. Environmental destruction, including acid rain, is a major problem. [Mizuho Nakata] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
