A system that manages sales information in real time at the point of sale. The benefits of introducing a POS can be broadly divided into hard benefits and soft benefits. Hard benefits include improved checkout productivity, prevention of price registration errors, customer service through the issuance of receipts with the product name included, simplification of store clerical work, reduction in the cost of cashier education and training, reduction in the cost of individual item pricing, and prevention of fraudulent under-pricing among co-workers. Soft benefits include the effect of reducing inventory by identifying weak-selling products, the effect of preventing stockouts by identifying best-selling products, the effect of increasing gross profit by affecting the profit mix, the effect of new products, measurement of the effect of sales promotion, and the effect of improving shelf space productivity.
