A representative painter of the early Netherlandish period. Also known as Bosch. His real name was Jeroen van Aken. The name Bosch was taken from a part of his hometown, 's-Hertogenbosch. Born the son of a painter, he became a member of the Brotherhood of the Virgin Mary at St. Jan's Cathedral around 1486-1487 and worked on a wide variety of projects. He excelled in religious, allegorical and genre paintings, combining precise realistic techniques with a unique bizarre and unrestrained fantasy, and has elements that lead to surrealist painting. He also had a great influence on Bruegel. His representative works include The Hay Cart (c. 1485-1505) and The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1505-1516), both in the Prado Museum in Madrid, as well as The Last Judgment (c. 1485-1505, in the Museum of Fine Arts of the University of Fine Arts, Vienna), and The Ship of Fools (c. 1485-1505, in the Louvre).

初期ネーデルラントの代表的画家。ボッシュともいう。本名イェルーン・ファン・アーケンJeroen van Aken。ボスの名は出身地ス・ヘルトーヘンボスの一部からとられた。画家の子として生まれ，1486年―1487年ころシント・ヤン大聖堂の聖母マリア兄弟会の会員となり，さまざまな仕事を手がけた。宗教画，寓意(ぐうい)画，風俗画等を得意とし，精緻(せいち)な写実的手法と独特の奇怪・奔放な幻想とを配合し，シュルレアリスム絵画につながる要素をもつ。ブリューゲルに与えた影響も大きい。代表作にマドリードのプラド美術館所蔵の《乾草の車》（1485年―1505年ころ）《快楽の園》（1505年―1516年ころ）のほか，《最後の審判》（1485年―1505年ころ，ウィーン，美術大学付属美術館蔵），《愚者の船》（1485年―1505年ころ，ルーブル美術館蔵）などがある。
