A settlement in the Northwest Territories, Canada. Population: about 100. It is located on the eastern shore of Great Bear Lake, just south of the Arctic Circle. Formerly called El Dorado, it was mined for gold and silver, but in 1929-30, pitchblende, a type of uranium ore, was discovered there, and it was renamed Port Radium (pronounced Port Radium in English). This discovery broke the virtual monopoly of the Belgian Congo in radium production at the time. It is the largest uranium producing area in North America, with mining reaching 33,400 tons in 1939.
