1897‐1960 An Austrian-born British scholar of international law. After studying at the University of Vienna and the University of London, he became an assistant professor at the University of London, and then a professor at Cambridge University in 1938, leaving the university in 1955 to become a judge at the International Court of Justice. He is known for his unique academic style, which harmonizes the solid theory of German jurisprudence with British-style positivism. In his first work (1927), he discussed how private law principles have been introduced into international law by analogy, and in The Functions of Law in International Society (1933), he discussed the possibilities of international law based on the characteristics of international society.
