Ukiyobushi - Ukiyobushi

Japanese:
Ukiyobushi - Ukiyobushi

A type of folk song. It was sometimes used in the Edo period as an alternative name for popular songs, but in recent years it refers to the music of Tachibana Yakinosuke (1868-1935). Tachibana returned to Tokyo from Kansai in 1886 (Meiji 19), when he could not appear on stage without a license, and was performing songs from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka under a license for rakugo as a "three-city music storyteller." At the instruction of a police officer in attendance, he applied to the Metropolitan Police Department for a license for "Ukiyo-bushi." This application was rejected, but in 1912 the Governor of Tokyo approved him as the head of the school, and "Ukiyo-bushi" became the officially recognized name. After that, he criticized society by writing parodies of various popular songs, including "Dodoitsu" and "Totchiriton." In the 1950s, Nishikawa Tatsu (1895-1959) also used this name.
