Ukiyoburo - Ukiyoburo

This is a humorous book written by Shikitei Sanba. It consists of four stories and nine volumes. It was published between 1809 and 1813 (Bunka 6-10). It is also known as Odobebanashi Ukiyoburo. It is set in a public bath, which was a social gathering place for the common people of Edo, and depicts the actions of the various people who gather there, mainly through conversation. The first and fourth stories are set in the men's bath, the second and third stories are set in the women's bath, the third story is set during New Year's, and the rest are set in autumn. Each story depicts the scene from early morning to evening. According to the notes, the author wrote the first story at the recommendation of a bookseller after hearing a rakugo story about public baths by Sanshotei Karaku, but the first story shows the influence of Santo Kyoden's yellow-covered book Kenguirikomi Sento Shinwa. Although each story has no consistent plot and sometimes seems contrived, the characters' actions are accurately depicted and the humor is guaranteed. Along with "Ukiyodoko," this is one of Sanma's masterpieces, and its thorough realism makes it a valuable resource for the Japanese language.

式亭三馬(しきていさんば)作の滑稽本(こっけいぼん)。4編9冊。1809～13年（文化6～10）刊。『諢話(おどけばなし)浮世風呂』とも。江戸庶民の社交場であった銭湯を舞台に、そこに集まる雑多な人物の動作を、会話を主として克明に描いた作品である。前編・四編は男湯、二編・三編は女湯、また三編は正月、他は秋の季節とし、各編早朝から夕刻に至る間の情景を写す。凡例によれば、作者が三笑亭可楽(さんしょうていからく)の銭湯に関する落語を聞き、本屋の勧めで前編を執筆したというが、前編には山東京伝(さんとうきょうでん)の黄表紙(きびょうし)『賢愚湊銭湯新話(けんぐいりこみせんとうしんわ)』の影響が指摘できる。各編とも一貫した筋はなく、ときにわざとらしい趣向もあるが、人物の行動を克明に写して、おのずから笑いが確保されている。『浮世床』とともに三馬の代表作で、徹底した写実は国語資料としての価値も大きい。
