Worcester
The county seat of Worcestershire, in the mid-west of England, England. It is part of the Worcester district. It is located about 40 km southwest of Birmingham, on the left bank of the River Severn. It became important after the Synod of Whitby in 664, and in 679-80 a diocese was created for the Wiccans living in the area, and a bishopric was established in St. Peter's Cathedral in the town. During the reign of Alfred the Great (reigned 871-899), the town was walled. It was granted its first royal charter in 1189, and prospered in the Middle Ages due to the wool industry. Glove manufacturing has been important since the 13th century, and porcelain manufacturing since the mid-18th century, and machinery manufacturing has also developed. It is also known as the birthplace of Worcester sauce. The cathedral has always played an important role in the city's history, but the cathedral today was founded in 1084 and has been expanded and remodeled many times since then. During the Puritan Revolution, it was a fierce battlefield, and in 1651 Charles II, who led the Scottish army south, was defeated by Cromwell's army here (Battle of Worcester). Area: 33 km2 . Industrialization was delayed due to lack of water power, but with the introduction of steam power and the opening of a canal in 1828, industrialization progressed rapidly, mainly in cotton textiles, and it grew into an industrial center in central Massachusetts. Machine, machine tool, metal, leather, and textile industries are carried out. It is a transportation hub from New England to the west and New York, and is also a regional wholesale and retail center. There are many educational institutions and art museums, including Clark University (founded in 1887). The annual Worcester Music Festival (1858) is the oldest in the country. Population: 181,045 (2010).
