...As a result of the aim to make renga literary, yushin renga, which has a world of waka poetry, became mainstream, while haikai-like renga became an undercurrent. On the other hand, people competed over the skill of adding to the previous verse (tsukeai), and the skill of this became the subject of gambling, and so-called gambling renga became popular around this time. The shogunate issued a ban on gambling renga, and there were so many scorers (people who judge the skill of verses and give them points) that it was sarcastically stated in "Nijogawara Rakusho" that "there are so many people who give points to verses."...
