Pojang-wang (Treasure King)

Japanese: 宝蔵王 - ほうぞうおう(英語表記)Pojang-wang
Pojang-wang (Treasure King)
[raw]?
[Died] 682?
The 28th (last) king of Goguryeo, one of the three ancient kingdoms of Korea (reigned 642-668). His given names were Jang and Beojang. His father was King Daeyang. Goguryeo's powerful minister, Cheon Gaesomun, killed King Yeongyu and installed the son of King Daeyang, the king's younger brother, as King Bozang (642). In other words, he became King Bozang. In the third year of King Bozang's reign (644), Emperor Taizong of the Tang urged Goguryeo to make peace with Silla, but Cheon Gaesomun strongly opposed it, and the king, forced by Somun, started war with Tang and Silla. However, after Somun's death in 645, internal strife arose among his children, so Emperor Gaozong of the Tang allied with King Munmu of Silla and attacked Goguryeo. As a result, King Hozo surrendered along with his family, and thereafter lived in Liaodong with permission from the Tang Dynasty, and was given the title of Commander-in-Chief of Liaodong Province and King of Korea.
