Located in Leiden, the Netherlands, this is the country's oldest national university. It was founded in 1575 by William I of Orange in recognition of the achievements made by the citizens of Leiden in the war against Spain during the Dutch War of Independence (1573-1574). In the 16th and 17th centuries, the university gained international recognition for its humanities, and in the 18th century, it became known for its research in science and medicine. It has faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine, Science, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Philosophy, and Archaeology. Its affiliated facilities include the Leiden Observatory, Botanical Gardens, the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology, the Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and many other research institutes and museums.
