Leiden University (English: Universiteit Leiden)

Located in Leiden, the Netherlands, this is the country's oldest national university. It was founded in 1575 by William I of Orange in recognition of the achievements made by the citizens of Leiden in the war against Spain during the Dutch War of Independence (1573-1574). In the 16th and 17th centuries, the university gained international recognition for its humanities, and in the 18th century, it became known for its research in science and medicine. It has faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine, Science, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Philosophy, and Archaeology. Its affiliated facilities include the Leiden Observatory, Botanical Gardens, the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology, the Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and many other research institutes and museums. Asian studies are also active, and Japanese language courses are offered. There are 2,090 faculty members and 17,190 students (1997).

オランダ、ライデン市にある同国最古の国立大学。オランダ独立戦争（1573～1574）の際、スペインとの戦いでライデン市民が果たした功績により、1575年オラニエ公ウィレム1世の手で設立された。16～17世紀には人文科学の分野で国際的声価を得、18世紀には理学、医学の研究で知られた。神学部、法学部、医学部、理学部、教養学部、社会科学部、哲学部、考古学部をもつ。付属施設としては、ライデン天文台、植物園、王立言語学人類学研究所、自然史博物館、考古学博物館をはじめ多数の研究所、博物館があり、アジア研究も盛んで、日本語講座が設けられている。教員数2090人、学生数1万7190人（1997）。
