Kouzorina - Kouzorina

Japanese: コウゾリナ - こうぞりな
Kouzorina - Kouzorina

A biennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae) commonly found in mountains and fields. It overwinters in a rosette, and in spring the stems grow to a height of 30 cm to 1 meter. The leaves are spatula-shaped. When cut, a white milky liquid comes out. The plant is covered with brown, hook-like bristles, and it is said that the name was originally kaozorina or kamisorinina (shaved face vegetable) due to its rough texture, which later became kozorina. From May to October, it produces many yellow flower heads consisting of ray flowers, each 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The achene is reddish brown with a dirty white pappus, and is wind-dispersed. It is distributed from Sakhalin to Kyushu and China. Boiled young leaves are edible and are suitable for livestock feed. Kanchikouzorina is an alpine form of this species, with a short height, black involucres, and deep yellow flowers.
