Kaichang Persecution

...The second "Zhou Wu Persecution" took place in 574 (Jiande 3) and 577, when civil and military officials were gathered to debate the relative merits of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and then not only Buddhism but also Taoism was abolished. The third, which took place in 845 (Kaichang 5), is called the "Kaichang Persecution" after the era name, but this time, due to the schemes of Taoists, not only Buddhism but also the three foreign religions that had been introduced from the west, Nestorianism, Zhijiao, and Manichaeism, were suppressed. The fourth "Later Zhou Persecution" took place in 955 (Xiande 2), unlike the previous three, and was primarily motivated by the state's financial difficulties....
