Funagatayama

A volcano on the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, it is the highest peak of the Funagata mountain range. Its elevation is 1,500 meters. Its name is said to come from the fact that it resembles the bottom of a boat when viewed from the Miyagi side. On the Yamagata side, it is called Gosho-san, and the name is said to come from the legend that Emperor Juntoku, who was exiled to Sado after the Jōkyū Rebellion (1221), took refuge there and lived there. Gosho Shrine is located on the summit. The mountain is mainly made of pyroxene andesite. The eastern side is the highest part of the chipped crater wall, and to the east is the old crater's Yuyachi. The upper part is a beech zone, but above 1,400 meters, dwarf pines and alpine plants grow. There are several climbing routes from both Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures.

宮城・山形県境にある火山で、船形連峰の最高峰。標高1500メートル。山名は、宮城県側から見ると船底を伏せた形に似ていることに由来するという。山形県側では御所山(ごしょさん)といい、山名は承久(じょうきゅう)の乱（1221）後佐渡に流罪となった順徳(じゅんとく)上皇が逃れ住んだという伝説によるという。山頂に御所神社がある。山体はおもに輝石安山岩からなる。東側が欠けた火口壁のもっとも高い部分にあたり、東に下ると旧火口の湯谷地がある。上部はブナ帯であるが、1400メートル以上にはハイマツや高山植物が生育する。宮城、山形両県からいくつかの登山ルートがある。
