The 1930 Society

Japanese: 一九三〇年協会 - せんきゅうひゃくさんじゅうねんきょうかい

An art group. Founded in May 1926 (Showa 1) by Kojima Zentaro, Kinoshita Takanori, Satomi Katsuzo, Maeda Kanji, and Saeki Yuzo, the group held its first exhibition at Shichinosha in Kyobashi, Tokyo, displaying works created during their stay in Europe. All of the artists had studied in France and trained in the atmosphere of the Ecole de Paris. Their aim was to reject the banality of the established art world, to oppose the increasingly radical proletarian art, and to seek the purity of art. The group's name was modeled after the 1830 School formed by Millet and Corot. From the second exhibition onwards, the group called for submissions from the public, and by the fifth exhibition in January 1930, the group had added Miyasaka Masaru, Nakano Kazutaka, Nakayama Takashi, Kinoshita Yoshiken, Hayashi Takeshi, Koga Harue, Kawaguchi Kigai, Noguchi Yataro, Ihara Usaburo, Kojima Zenzaburo, and Fukuzawa Ichiro as members, developing a refreshing movement based on Fauvism.

美術団体。1926年(昭和1)5月，小島善太郎，木下孝則，里見勝蔵，前田寛治，佐伯祐三によって結成され，東京･京橋の室内社に滞欧作を陳列して第1回展を開いた。いずれもフランスに留学してエコール･ド･パリの雰囲気の中で修業した画家たちで，既成画壇の陳腐を排し，尖鋭化するプロレタリア美術に対抗し，芸術の純粋を求めるというのが趣意であった。会名はミレーやコローが結んだ1830年派に倣ったものである。第2回展から公募し，30年1月の第5回展までに宮坂勝，中野和高，中山巍，木下義謙，林武，古賀春江，川口軌外，野口弥太郎，伊原宇三郎，児島善三郎，福沢一郎らを会員に加え，フォービスムを基調とする清新な運動を展開した。
