Ontake has been the subject of mountain worship since ancient times, and the Okusha Shrine is located on the highest peak, Kengamine, where a small shrine and a stone statue are enshrined. Ontake worship flourished from the 1790s onwards during the Edo period, but with the start of the Meiji period, the ban on women being lifted, the opening of the Chuo Line (1910), improvements to the Nakasendo road, and W. Weston's ascent of Ontake in 1891, mountain climbing became more sporty, and many climbers began to visit the mountain.
