... The lofty and majestic shape of Mt. Ontake has been the subject of mountain worship since ancient times, and the Okusha Shrine is located on the highest peak, Kengamine, where a small shrine and a stone statue are enshrined. Ontake worship flourished from the 1790s onwards during the Edo period, but with the start of the Meiji period, the ban on women being lifted, the opening of the Chuo Line (1910), improvements to the Nakasendo road, and W. Weston's ascent of Ontake in 1891, mountain climbing became more sporty, and many climbers began to visit the mountain. In particular, a bus route was opened to Tanohara (2,200m), the seventh station of the Otakiguchi entrance (1967), further strengthening the mountain's character as a tourist destination. ...

…　高峻で雄大な御嶽山の山容は古来山岳信仰の対象となり，最高峰剣ヶ峰に御嶽神社奥社があり，祠や石像が安置されている。御嶽信仰の盛期は江戸時代の1790年代以降であったが，明治に入って女人禁制の解除，中央本線の開通(1910)や中山道の改修などのほか1891年のW.ウェストンの御嶽登山が契機となって登山にスポーツの要素が多くなり，多くの登山者がこの山を訪れるようになった。とくに王滝口七合目の田ノ原(2200m)までバス路線が開通し(1967)，観光地としての性格は一段と強まった。…
