After graduating from the University of Berlin, he moved to Russia and collected and studied materials related to the language, literature, and ethnicity of Turkic peoples. He wrote two major works, the four-volume Draft Dictionary of Turkish Dialects (1893-1911) and the ten-volume, 18-book set of Materials on the Ethnic Literature of the Northern Turkic Tribes (1866-1907).
