…Russian orientalist, Turkologist, and ethnologist born in Berlin. His German name was Friedrich Wilhelm Radloff. After graduating from the University of Berlin, he moved to Russia and collected and studied materials related to the language, literature, and ethnicity of Turkic peoples. He wrote two major works, the four-volume Draft Dictionary of Turkish Dialects (1893-1911) and the ten-volume, 18-book set of Materials on the Ethnic Literature of the Northern Turkic Tribes (1866-1907). He also made pioneering contributions to the study of newly discovered ancient Turkic materials, such as the Orkhon inscriptions and Uighur documents. …
