National Defense Academy of Japan

It is an educational and training institute of the Ministry of Defense established in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, for the purpose of training uniformed officers of the Self-Defense Forces. It was established in 1952 as the National Security College, and was renamed the National Defense Academy when the Self-Defense Forces were established in 1954. Students are recruited by exam from those who have graduated from high school, and after four years of education and training at the college, they undergo further education and training at the officer candidate schools of the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces to become junior officers of the Ground, Navy, and Air Force. As of 2017, students are paid a monthly allowance of 111,800 yen and a final allowance equivalent to that of national civil servants, and are organized into student corps as members of the Self-Defense Forces, living in student dormitories on campus and receiving their education and training. Since 1991, graduates have been awarded bachelor's degrees by the Ministry of Education's National Institution for Academic Degrees (established on July 1, 1991, currently the Independent Administrative Institution for Academic Degrees and University Reform), and master's and doctoral degrees have been awarded to graduates from the graduate school equivalent of a graduate school. Also, from 1992, female students have been allowed to enroll. The school is located in Hashirimizu, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

自衛隊の制服組幹部を養成する目的で神奈川県横須賀(よこすか)市に設置されている防衛省の教育訓練機関。1952年（昭和27）保安大学校として発足、1954年の自衛隊発足とともに防衛大学校と改称された。学生は、高等学校を卒業した者から試験によって採用され、同校での4年間の教育訓練ののち、さらに陸上・海上・航空各自衛隊の幹部候補生学校での教育訓練を経て、初級幹部である三等陸・海・空尉になる。2017年（平成29）時点で、学生は月額11万1800円の手当および国家公務員に準じた期末手当を支給され、自衛隊員として学生隊に編成されて校内の学生舎に居住して教育訓練を受ける。1991年度（平成3）以降、卒業生には文部省の学位授与機構（1991年7月1日設置。現、独立行政法人大学改革支援・学位授与機構）から学士号を、大学院に相当する研究科でも卒業者に修士号および博士号が授与されるようになった。また1992年度から女子の入校も認められるようになった。所在地は神奈川県横須賀市走水(はしりみず)。
