A regional political party in India. Its name means "the party of immortality." It was founded in 1921 with the slogan of reforming Sikh temples. After Indian independence (1947), it led the movement to create a Punjabi (the mother tongue of Sikhs) state, and in 1966 Punjab state was born. Around this time, it began a movement to expand state autonomy, which later led to the Punjab problem. In the late 1970s, the Sikh extremist group Khalsa rose to power and began a struggle for the establishment of an independent Sikh state, "Khalistan," which led to the party splitting into moderate and radical factions, a division that continues to this day. → Related article Punjab Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
