A regional political party in India. Its name means "the party of immortality." It was founded in 1921 with the slogan of reforming Sikh temples. After Indian independence (1947), it led the movement to create a Punjabi (the mother tongue of Sikhs) state, and in 1966 Punjab state was born. Around this time, it began a movement to expand state autonomy, which later led to the Punjab problem. In the late 1970s, the Sikh extremist group Khalsa rose to power and began a struggle for the establishment of an independent Sikh state, "Khalistan," which led to the party splitting into moderate and radical factions, a division that continues to this day.

インドの地方政党。名は〈不滅の党〉の意。1921年，シク教寺院の改革をスローガンに結成された。インド独立（1947年）後，パンジャーブ語（シク教徒の母語）州創設運動を主導，1966年にはパンジャーブ州を誕生させた。この頃から州自治権拡大運動を開始したことが，後のパンジャーブ問題を招来した。1970年代末からシク教過激派カールサーが台頭してシク教徒独立国〈カーリスターン〉の設立を求める闘争を開始したため，これをめぐって党内は穏健派と急進派に分裂し，今日に至っている。
