Japanese: 防衛庁 - ぼうえいちょう

An external bureau of the Cabinet Office (formerly the Prime Minister's Office) that manages and operates the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces and handles related affairs. It also handles affairs related to the U.S. military in Japan under treaties. It is the successor to the National Safety Agency, established in 1952, and was called the Defense Agency in 1954. It was headed by a Minister of State and was under the command and supervision of the Prime Minister. In addition to the internal bureaus, it had the Ground, Maritime, and Air Staff Offices, the Joint Staff Office, the Defense Facilities Agency as an external bureau, and the National Institute for Defense Studies and the National Defense Academy as affiliated organizations. In January 2007, it was promoted to the Ministry of Defense. Kyuma Akio was appointed as the first Minister.

陸上・海上・航空自衛隊の管理・運営およびこれに関する事務を行う内閣府（旧総理府）の外局。条約に基づく在日米軍関係の事務も行う。1952年設置の保安庁の後身で，1954年防衛庁と称する。長官には国務大臣があてられ，内閣総理大臣の指揮監督を受けた。内部部局のほか，陸上・海上・航空の各幕僚監部，統合幕僚監部などがあり，外局として防衛施設庁，付属機関として防衛研究所，防衛大学校などがあった。2007年１月，防衛省に昇格。初代大臣には久間章生が就任した。
