Keiji Goto

Japanese: 後藤慶二 - ごとう・けいじ
Keiji Goto
Year of death: February 3, 1919
Year of birth: October 29, 1883 (Meiji 16)
An architect of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Tokyo. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1909 (Meiji 42) and joined the Ministry of Justice's Maintenance Division, where he was involved in the design and on-site supervision of the Toyotama Prison in Nakano, Tokyo. This job led him to also get involved in structural research, and he published an excellent paper on structural science. He was also a genius with Leonardo-like talent, possessing outstanding design abilities. Although he died young and produced few works, his style is reminiscent of the German Jugendstil movement, and he left behind several residential works, including the Tokyo District Court. He also contributed many articles to magazines, and played a pioneering role as an architectural theorist. He is also the author of "History of Japanese Theatre" (1925). <References> "Posthumous Manuscripts of Goto Keiji" (privately published)
